Food therapies on cirrhosis

Cirrhosis refers to the chronic liver disease that caused by plenty of pathological factors set on the liver for a long time, leading to the fibrillation of the tissues, characterized by pseudolobuli and regenerated nodule. On clinical manifestations, liver function damage and portal vein high pressure are common, and in later period, alimentary canal haemorrhage、hepatic encephalopathy、secondary infection are easy to occur.

Therapeutic principles

  • 1 The diet should be diversified to increase the patient’appetite.

  • 2 Add enough calories, but should be less than 2000kcal/d.

  • 3 Reasonable arrangements for protein intake:People who have Hypoproteinemia or ascites should intake foods of high protein;people having badly-damaged liver functioning or hepatic coma should strictly control the intake of protein to decrease the pressure of liver and the thickness of ammonia in blood.

  • 4.Apply low fat and Low fiber diet.

  • 5.Apply adequate water;apply 350-450 starch foods per day.

  • 6.Control the water and sodium in food. People having hydroncus or slight ascites should have protosalt food, with no more than 3g of salt everyday, severe hydroncus people should have food of no salt and control the amount within 500ml. Avoid food of high sodium. Daily intake of water should be restricted within 1000 ml to 1500 ml.

  • 7.Eat more foods with zinc and magnesium;forbid drinking. Foods have abundant zinc:lean pork, beef, eggs, fish. Foods full of magnesium:green leaf vegetables, peas, dairy foods and grain foods.

  • 8.Apply all kinds of vitamins especially VC.

  • 9.Apply more mind、easy-digested、no stimulation foods and intake few each time for more diets each day.

General foods:

  • 1 Dong gua juice:dong gua 250 grams,clean、chop and squeeze into juice,add 50 grams of sugar,when it melt, it’s ready. Apply one dose a day divided into 3-4 times.

  • 2 Carp soup:one ji yu, scale the fish and clean the viscera, add dong gua pi 60-100g, stew together until it’s mushy, eat the fish and drink the soup.

  • 3.Radish stewed with lean meat: luo bo 250g, lean pork 150g. Clean the luo bo, peel the skin and slice into cubes. Slice the meat into cubes as well and drop in the pot, boil well and add all the seasonings as cooking wine, green onion, ginger, add in garlic, salt when it’s well done. Apply at once.

  • 4.Ricefield eel: one ricefield eel, clean it well and soak with garlic and a bottle of wine. Drink the decoction.

  • 5.Yu nao fen:smash yu nao into powder and apply with water for 3-5 g each time.

  • 6.Dou zao he tao ren mi wan:black beans 100g, red dates 100g, flour 100g, he tao ren 100g, ming fan 100g, proper honey. Clean the black beans, steam with flour and then bake it dry, smash into powder. Clean the dates, expel the cores, smash with he tao ren、ming fan, then add in hei dou and flour powder. Mix well. Make into pills. Apply 10-25g each time for 3 times a day.

  • 7 Chao si gua zisi gua zi 100g, clean and dry them. Stir the si gua zi until they turn yellow, smash the fried si gua zi into powder. Apply 3g each time for 3 times a day.

A. Qi zhi shi zu symptoms:

clinical manifestations:

Not feeling tough when pressing the stomach when the person take in the air; turgor or pain below the costal region;less appetite; gasteremphraxis after the meal; belching and not feeling well; few urine.

Food therapies principles:

Soothing the liver and activate the spleen; promoting the circulation of qi and blood circulation.

Food therapies:

1.Su zi porridge: su zi 10g, rice 100g, three slices of ginger;smash the su zi, add in water and collect the decoction above and make porridge with rice.

2.Li yuchi dou chen pi soup:one li yu about 500g, chi dou 120g, chen pi 6g. Stew together in the pot until it’s ready. Apply 2 times aday.

3.Yi yi ren tian luo hua jiao porridge:tian luo 10 pieces, yi yi ren 30g, hua jiao 10g. Stew the tian luo well and pick out the meat, mix with yi yi ren and hua jiao, then make porridge, salt it when it’s still hot. Split into day and night doses for continuous 7 days for a course of treatment.

4.Bi qi stewed with zhu du: 10-15 bi qi, zhu du 250g, a little salt. Slice the bi qi, clean the zhu du and chop into cubes, add proper water and stew well. Salt it when it’s ready. Eat zhu du and drink the soup for one time a day for continuously 7 days.

5.Fu ling bie zao soup:fu ling 30g, dates 10 pieces, bie jia 10g. Boil the fu ling and bie jia in the pot and add in the dates when it first boiled, continue to boil 30-45 minutes and add sugar at last.

  1. Qian niu zi porridge:1g qian niu zi, 100g rice and 2 slices of ginger. Smash the qian niu zi into powder; add 800 ml water and make rice into porridge, when It’s about to ready, add in qian niu zi powder and then put in ginger for another round of boiling.

B. cold-damp invasion of spleen

clinical manifestations:

Abdominal fullness and feel like water in the belly; edema on face、limbs and stomach;tired and fear of cold;little urine;viscous excrements;white and greasy tongue;slow pulse.

Food therapies principles:

warming yang for dispelling cold; promoting qi circulation to induce diuresis.

Food therapies:

  • 1.Chan dou brown sugar drink: beans 120 grams, 90 grams of brown sugar. Put bean and brown sugar together into the casserole, add 5 cups of water, turn on small fire and stew into one cup of drink. Drink in the morning and afternoon for 7~10 days for a course of treatment.

  • 2 Yi yi ren rice porridge:Yi yi ren 30 grams, 50 grams of rice, into the pot and make porridge with the usual method, then add crystal sugar, boil slightly. Apply day and night.

  • 3 Red bean shan yao drink:red bean 50 grams, 50 grams of shan yao. Wash the red bean, add appropriate amount of water into the pot, then add yam, boil well. Apply in the morning as well as afternoon for 10 days for a course of treatment.

  • 4 Fu ling Ze xie Chicken, One chicken, 60 grams fu ling and 60 g of ze xie. Wash and split the chicken, stuff in fu ling and ze xie, steam for 3~4 hours. Drink soup and eat chicken. Apply within 2 days in 2~3 times.

  • 5 Black fish black soya bean soup:one fish, black beans 500 grams, proper amount rice wine, sugar. Cut the fish and wash the black beans, put into the pot, add appropriate amount of water, boil through for 1 hours, pour the dish, liquor, brown sugar, continue to simmer until the fish and black beans were well cooked.

  • 6.Ling zhu carp tofu soup:one carp, 25g fu ling,bai zhu 15g, ginger、garlic and green onion. Clean the carp and boil with fu ling、bai zhu, add tofu and the seasonings. Drink the soup and eat fish, use 7-10 days as a course of treatment.

  • 7.Pork leg stewed with red beans:250g pork leg meat, 120g red bean. Stew the pork with read beans for 2 hours. Eat the meat and drink the soup for 15 days as a course of treatment.

  • 8.Dong gua pi can dou soup:dong gua pi 30g, can dou 60g. Clean them ewll and out into the marmite and boil for 20 minutes. Collect the decoction and apply anytime you like.

  • 9.Carp dong gua soup:one carp fish, stew with 500 g dong gua along with 3 pieces white onion. Apply as meal.

  • 10.Dog meat porridge:clean dog meat and boil with rice, make porridge. Apply with empty stomach is better choice.

  • 11.Red bean yi ren ju pi porridge:Red beans 30g, yi ren 30g, chen pi 3g, geng mi 30g, make porridge together. Apply one time a day for a week time.

  • 12.Bai shu ye soup:ba shu ye1000g, clean and boil in water. Eat the leaf and drink the soup.

Retention of damp-heat:

clinical manifestations:

Yellow complexion; bigger and tougher belly; dysphoria with smothery sensation & bitter palates; thirst without desire to drink; redness in urination; constipation; tongue edge red; yellow greasy moss or with dark gray color; thin and rapid pulse.

Food therapies principles:

Clearing away heat and promoting diuresis; relieving water retention with hydragogue.

Food therapies:

  • 1 Che qian zi porridge:che qian zi 15 grams, 100 grams of rice, proper crystal candy. Wrap the che qian zi and put into the casserole, add appropriate amount of water, boil after the first boiling and stew for 25 minutes, collect upper decoction, then add in rice and appropriate amount of boiling water, cook through. Add the sugar for tasty flavor. Apply day and night.

  • 2 Dong gua stewed with black fish:1 fish, dong gua 500 grams, proper white onion. Clean the fish scales and viscera, and boil with dong gua, onion, remember do not add salt. Eat meat soup. Apply one dose a day, 5~7 days for a course of treatment.

  • 3 Watermelon garlic juice:one watermelon, peeled garlic. Clean the watermelon, cut a triangular hole on it, stuff in garlic, and cover with melon lid. Steam well. Drink juice while hot.

  • 4 Dong gua zi porridge:dong gua zi 30 grams, 100 grams of rice. Cook dong gua zi and collect decoction, make porridge with rice. Apply at will.

  • 5 Carp dong gua soup:one carp about 250 grams, 500 grams of dong gua. Boil all of them with no salt. Apply once a day.

  • 6 Fu gan pig gall drink:fu gan is the liquid been filtered after Douzhir was made into bean curd jelly. Heat one bowl of the fu gan and mix in one piece of pig gall, drink the decoction. Apply in the morning and afternoon.

  • 7 Red bean porridge:Red bean 50 grams, 50 grams of rice, proper sugar. Wash red beans, soak in warm water for 2~3 hours and add in the casserole, drop appropriate amount of water, then simmer well. Add rice into the red bean soup, continue to boil until it’s porridge, mix with sugar. Apply day and night.

  • 8 Dong gua porridge:100 grams of dong gua, 100 grams of rice, proper amount of crystal sugar. Cut dong gua into pieces, add water and make porridge, sprinkling crystal sugar and boil for a while. Split into day and night usage.

  • 9 Yu mu xu xi gua pi soup:3 bananas, 60 grams of yu mi xu. Xi gua pi 200 grams. Peel the bananas, slice the watermelon, and boil with yu mi xu in the casserole, add appropriate amount of water, simmer for 30 minutes, add in sugar and boil for a while. Apply as dessert.

  • 10 Carp red bean soup:500 grams of carp, 100 grams of red beans. Stew them together until the beans are well cooked. Split the dosage into day and night on empty stomach.

  • 11 Hu lu soup:h- u lu ke 30~60 grams, dong gua pi 30 grams, 30 grams of xi gua pi. Cook them together and collect the decoction of 300ml. Apply in the morning and afternoon for 150 ml each time.

  • 12 Dong gua red bean and urad soup:red bean 120 grams, 100 grams of mung bean. Stew the three well and drink the soup.

  • 13 Frog lou gu powder:2 frogs, dry them well. Seven lou gu dry them as well.Hu lu ke 15g. Smash the three into powder. Apply with yellow wine.

  • 14 Onion mixed with tofu: fried tofu and onions, mix well. Apply within daily meals.

  • 15 - Bai mai water chestnut: 50 grams of water chestnut, bai bian dou 10 grams, 50 grams of - da mai gang. Cook well. Eat beans and water chestnut.

  • 16 Red bean stewed with black fish: 250 grams of black fish, dong gua 500 grams, 100 grams of red beans, three onions. Clean the fish and slice the dong gua. Cut onions into shreds. Add appropriate amount of water, stew until all materials are overripe, add no seasonings. Eat the fish and drink the soup. Apply at will.

  • 17 Three melons soup: watermelon, dong gua, cucumber each 100 grams. Clean and cut into cubes. Stew with the exocarpium citrulli. Eat melon soup.

D.Liver, spleen and blood stasis

clinical manifestations:

The abdomen is big and hard; vein engorgement; abdominal pain; dark complexion; vascular nevus on face, neck and chest; red mark palm; purple tongue color; thirsty but can not digest; black stool; weak pulse.

Food therapies principles:

Activating blood circulation to dissipate blood stasis; promoting qi circulation to induce diuresis.

Food therapies

  • 1 Red bean crucian carp porridge:50 grams red beans and one tail of carp. Cook the carp boneless and leave the soup. Make red bean porridge. When it’s about to ready, add fish sauce and mix thoroughly, do not add seasoning. Apply when it’s warm for twice a day on continuous 5~7 days.

  • 2 Black beans egg porridge:30 grams of black beans, corn 90 grams, 2 eggs. Cook the three together until the eggs are boiled well, peel the eggs and make porridge. Apply on warm both in day and night. Usually 7~10 days is a course of treatment.

  • 3Tao ren dan shen porridge:10 grams of tao ren, dan shen 20 grams, 100 grams of rice, proper brown sugar. Mix tao ren、dan shen into the casserole and cook for half an hour, take juice and expel slag, add rice and make porridge. Add in brown sugar when about to ready. Take 1 time a day for 10 days for a course of treatment.

4 Ji cai egg porridge:fresh ji cai 200 grams, 2 eggs. Boil the ji cai with hard fire, then simmer when water remain 1/3 of the volume, add eggs and salt for flavor.

5 Garlic tea cuttlefish soup: garlic 10 pieces, 9 grams of tea. 1 cuttlefish. Stuff the fish abdomen with garlic and tea, put the fish into the jar with proper water, cooked well. Drink the soup and eat fish.

E.Spleen and kidney yang-deficiency symptoms:

clinical manifestations:

Abdominal fullness and discomfort;sallow complexion or white;anorexia;exhausted and tired;cold limbs or edema;oliguresis;purple tongue.

Food therapies principles:

Tonifying kidney and spleen;promoting the circulation of qi and induce diuresis.

Food therapies:

  • 1 Dog meat porridge:dog meat 500 grams, cut into strips, and 700 grams of rice and make porridge.

  • 2 Yellow hen soup:one hen, 6 grams of apple;red bean 30 grams. Clean and chop chicken, and put into the casserole;add appropriate amount of water, simmer until the meat soup get thick, add salt, boil another round. Eat meat and drink soup.

  • 3 Can dou beef soup:beef 150 grams. Add into the casserole with 150 grams of can dou. Boil well and simmer the meat to rags. Add salt for flavor.

  • 4 Mutton soup:mutton 250 grams, 1 luo bo. Cao guochen pigao liang jiangbi bo and pepper each 3 grams, a little ginger, onion, flour, salt, monosodium glutamate. Wash the lamb and chop, slice the luo bo. Wrap cao guochen pigao liang jiangbi bo and pepper, boil with mutton, luo bo, ginger, onion together in the casserole, add appropriate amount of water, boil them all and then turn to simmer for decoction, add salt、MSG, flour into thick soup.

F.Liver and kidney yin deficiency symptoms:

clinical manifestations:

Abdominal fullness;blue veins stand out;dim complexion;lip cyanosis;dry mouth;upset;insomnia;gingival bleeding;oliguresis;red tongue;taut、weak and rapid pulse.

Food therapies principles:

Nourishing liver and kidney;cool blood and clear stasis.

Food therapies:

  • 1 Liver xi gua pi soup:Xi gua pi 100 grams, 30 grams of pork liver. Add water and make soup. Eat pork liver and drink the soup for1~2 times a day.

  • 2 Duck meat Yi yi ren porridge:Duck 100 grams, 50 grams yi yi ren. Clean and chop the meat, mix with yi yi ren and make porridge. Apply in the morning and at dinner time.

  • 3 Shan yao yi yi ren boiled with turtle: 30 grams of shan yao, one
    turtle, 3 grams of shen pi, yi yi ren 15 grams. Cook the turtle in the casserole to half done, then add in shan yao, yi yi ren, chen pi until its totally done, finally add salt, MSG and cook for a moment.

  • 4 Fresh plums proper amount, clean and apply at will.
