Ingredients

Explanation

Fang Ji: One of the principal drugs, being bitter and pungent in flavor and slightly cold in nature, expelling wind and removing dampness.

Huang Qi: The other principal drug, being sweet in flavor and slightly hot in nature, invigorating Qi and consolidating the superficies, removing dampness and subsiding swelling.

Bai Zhu: Invigorating Qi, strengthening the spleen, promoting the
function of the spleen in transportation and transformation of food material.

Gan Cao: Reinforcing the spleen and regulating the stomach, tempering the actions of all the other ingredients.

Sheng Jiang and Da Zao: Coordinating Ying and Wei.

The Effect of 防己黄芪汤

Effect

Invigorating Qi, expelling wind, strengthening the spleen and removing dampness.

Indications

Exterior syndrome of deficiency due to wind-edema and wind-damp pathogen, marked by sweat, aversion to wind, heavy sensation of the body, dysuria, pale tongue with whitish coating, and floating pulse; including such diseases with the above symptoms as chronic nephritis, edema due to heart disease, ascites due to cirrhosis and rheumatic arthritis.

Administrations

Decocted in water for oral dose to be taken twice.
